Vintage Hand Lettered Sign Painting

Craft a sign inspired by traditional sign painting

This class nods to traditional hand lettering inspired by vintage sign painters, guiding learners to design and paint a wooden sign using sign-painting techniques using colorful paint pens and brushes.

We’ll cover the basics of hand-drawn lettering, including classic letter styles, spacing, stroke weight, and simple composition. You’ll sketch your own custom design with the help of a pro lettering artist, transfer it onto wood, and paint your lettering with guided instruction and plenty of tips along the way. Though there will be templates available for assistance if needed, this class will be rooted in the art of lettering, explaining how letters are built, spaced, and composed by hand. The goal is to make something custom and unique to you!

You’ll leave with a finished wooden sign and a solid introduction to traditional sign-painting techniques, to continue crafting your own signage for many applications.

This event is geared towards adult learners, but teens 13+ are welcome to join a parent or guardian.

Lauren Beck is an artist, educator, and the founder of Bloomery Art Co., known for her inviting, beginner-friendly workshops that celebrate creativity in all forms. With a background in illustration, Lauren brings a playful yet thoughtful approach to teaching.

Important Details:

Whether you're a complete novice or a seasoned crafter, this class is designed to inspire and excite you! Our beginner-friendly workshop is geared toward adult learners, but this particular instructor has PA clearances to safely work with teens (age 13+). Participants under 18 must have a parent or guardian attend the workshop with them, and a signed liability waiver is required prior to class.
